Bucks Mills
North Devon's Hidden Coastal Gem

The Hidden Valley
Peaceful village
Bucks Mills was remarkably self sufficient until c,50 years ago. Electricity and a tarmac road only arrived in the 1960's. The village originally existed to work the two lime kilns here on the beach., and after they ceased the village relied upon fishing and quarrying on Lundy Island. The lime kilns are now ruined, but the remains are still to be seen. Thanks to the kilns and the section of beach used for landing the lime boats, It is one of the few places on this part of the coast where there is an easy path down to the beach.

The Boathouse Cottage is located beside the footpath to the beach and right on the South West Coast Path. It is a tranquil seaside retreat, with little to disturb the sound of the streams and woodland birds. All traffic is kept to a public car park above at the entrance to the village, so there is no through traffic. Streams run down the wooded valley and spill out over the waterfall onto the beach.

For a change from the beach it's very pleasant just to wander up the lane and back beside the stream, for a brief walk; or to explore into the woods.

The woodland is part of a National Trust and Woodland Trust protected area of unique temperate rainforest.
